Family: Iridaceae •
Genus: Neomarica •
Species: caerulea (Bull.)(1928)•
Country of Origin: Brazil •
Common Names: Apostle Plant, Twelve Apostles, Walking Iris •
These are pictures from today! I was stoked when I saw they were open. I did a post on this plant Neomarica caerulea earlier in the year with pictures taken last year. Can I say, I love this plant!!!!!! It's fragrant like the irises my mother grew in Michigan. But, this iris is tropical, it's endemic to Brazil and adapts to our climate (zone 10b) easily. It blooms in fall which is nice because like in northern climates there aren't too many things blooming in fall. I hope to have this all over my yard in mass plantings in the next few years. I'll accomplish this by division, it's already in progress. I can't wait to see a massive bloom all at once. Once rare in these parts N. caerulea is starting to get more popular, you can see why. Please click on the photos to see these beauties in all their glory!
Enjoy,
Eric

Dendrobium 'ThongChai Gold'
Family: Orchidaceae •
Genus: Dendrobium •
Species: N/A •
Country of Origin: N/A •
Common Names: 'ThongChai Gold' •
I purchased this beautiful and lightly fragrant orchid at the American Orchid Society's gift shop. Their headquarters and a small but amazing botanic garden are located in Delray Beach right next to The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Since it's only about twenty minutes from here I make regular visits. Although, I haven't been there in a while. This orchid has bloomed every year since I bought it in 2003 with no extra care. I've re-potted it once. I don't really fuss over my orchids that much. Most of the ones I grow are endemic to areas with a similar climate to Florida, with distinct rainy and dry seasons. This helps with re-blooming and makes care easy.

Adenium obesum aka Desert Rose
Family: Apocynaceae •
Genus: Adenium •
Species: obesum •
Country of Origin: Africa and Arabia •
Common Names: Desert Rose, Sabi Star, Kudu •
My Desert Rose. My sister got this for my mom, probably ten years ago. She got bored with it and I inherited it, woo-hoo, lucky me. This may be one of my oldest plants. It flowers a couple times a year and the caudex keeps getting bigger and bigger! For this reason, I keep this in a small pot to enlarge the caudex. This is one cool reason to grow one of these plants. Also, I've trimmed it over the years to keep the shape I want. The beautiful flowers are lightly fragrant and reminiscent of cinnamon. This is one of the plants I use an organic time release fertilizer on twice a year. All these things make this is one of my favorite container plants.

Insects
Just a few insects I've managed to capture on film this week. Since everything is organic I have lots of little buddies and plenty of pests too!
Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly Erythemis simplicicollis
Unidentified insect it's either a grasshopper or a katydid. I dispatched it nonetheless I figure either way it eats leaves! Update 9-11-2008 This is a Conehead (really) Neoconocephalus sp. Thanks to Mr & Mrs Apteryx australis for another speedy id!

Zamia integrifolia
Family: Zamiaceae •
Genus: Zamia •
Species: integrifolia •
Country of Origin: Native to Florida •
Common Names: Coontie, Florida Arrowroot, Wild Sago •
This is my little coontie, it is endemic to this area. It was also native in southern Puerto Rico and Haiti, but appears to have been extirpated from those areas due to intensive land use.1 It was going extinct here but rebounded when people stopped using it as a food source. Florida's indigenous peoples and later European settlers processed the coontie's large storage root to extract an edible starch. For this reason the coontie was often commonly called Seminole bread during the late 1800s.2 Mine is growing under my 'Ghost' Bamboo and has really taken off since I put it in the ground this year. What you see is the female flower. This species is dioecious, having male or female reproductive parts (called "cones") present on separate plants3 This plant is also the larval plant of the Atala butterfly Eumaeus atala.

Dendrobium bigibbum compactum (Hybrid)
Family: Orchidaceae •
Genus: Dendrobium •
Species: bigibbum compactum (Hybrid) •
Country of Origin: N/A •
Common Names: •
My Mom got me this to cheer me up after a bad break up with a lady friend. Look at how this little beauty is growing out of a snail shell. It put a smile on my face!
This could be Dendrobium bigibbum compactum or a hybrid. I'm not 100% positive though. I could use some solid Id help! Could it be this one Dendrobium bigibbum 'Splash' x 'Alba Pink Lip' seen here www.orchidsonline.com.au/node/1099 or this one Dendrobium bigibbum var. alba x Chao Praya White xx Autumn Carnival seen here www.orchidsonline.com.au/node/928? Or some other hybrid?
